As part of Earthquake Engineering and Field Investigation Team, Dr Ji-Eun Byun participated in the joint preliminary virtual reconnaissance mission following the Myanmar earthquake on 28 March 2025.
The report was a joint work between StEER, the Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) Association, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), the UK’s EEFIT, GeoHazards International (GHI), and Thailand’s Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). The report
- provides an overview of the earthquake and its societal impacts,
- details the regulatory environment and construction practices in the affected areas,
- documents the earthquake's geotechnical dimensions and impacts to the built environment by synthesising insights from remote sensing and preliminary reports of geotechnical failures and damage to land, buildings and infrastructure; and
- offers recommendations for continued study of this event.
Dr Byun contributed to investigating the damage, impacts, and recovery of the power grid, following the earthquake. The outcomes revealed the occurrence of large-scale blackouts, their impacts on communities, and the challenges faced in restoring power.
